Sound Bath Therapy
An hour of pure sound — to settle your body and quiet your mind
A sound bath is an immersive listening experience in which you lie back, close your eyes, and let waves of sound from traditional instruments wash over you. There is no chanting, no effort, no meditation "technique" to learn. Just warm blankets, deep resonance, and a quiet hour of rest.
At RP Therapies, our private one-to-one sound baths are held in our purpose-built therapy centre, using a carefully chosen range of quartz crystal bowls, Himalayan singing bowls, chimes, gongs, and tuning forks.
A little history and science
Sound has been used for healing across every ancient culture we know of — from Tibetan bowls and temple gongs to Vedic chanting, Aboriginal didgeridoo, and West African drumming. Sound is one of the oldest therapies on earth.
Modern research echoes what these traditions have long known: slow, rich, low-frequency sound can shift the brain into more restful states, slow the breath, lower stress markers, and help the nervous system find its way back to balance. A sound bath is, in effect, an easy and deeply pleasant way of doing exactly that.
A word on Solfeggio frequencies and the chakras
Many of our bowls and tuning forks are tuned to the traditional Solfeggio frequencies — a set of ancient musical tones (396 Hz, 417 Hz, 528 Hz, 639 Hz, 741 Hz, 852 Hz and others) each linked in older spiritual teachings to a different quality, from release and grounding through to intuition and connection.
They are also often linked to the seven main chakras — the energy centres traditionally described in Indian yogic teaching, running from the base of the spine (root) through to the crown of the head (crown). Each chakra is associated with a particular body area, emotional theme, and tone.
We don't over-explain any of this during a session — the sound does the work. But if you're curious, simply ask before we begin and I'll gladly talk you through it.
What a sound bath may help with
Clients most often book when they're looking for:
Deep relaxation and stress relief
Help winding down from burnout or a long stressful period
Better sleep
Gentle emotional release — many people find tears, laughter, or quiet arrive during a session
A "reset" after travel, illness, or a particularly heavy week
A restful meditation alternative for those who struggle with silent meditation
A sound bath is not a medical treatment and is not offered as a cure for any condition.
What happens in a session
You'll arrive at the centre and we'll have a few minutes over tea, chatting through anything going on for you and what you'd like from the session.
You then settle on the therapy couch or floor mat, fully clothed, covered with blankets, with an eye pillow if you'd like one. I work around you with a carefully sequenced selection of instruments — often:
Quartz crystal bowls — long, pure tones tuned to the Solfeggio frequencies
Himalayan singing bowls — rich, warm overtones played around and gently on the body
Koshi or wind chimes — lighter, starrier sounds woven through
Tuning forks — precise, focused tones held near specific energy points
A gong — used sparingly and gently, for deeper release moments
The session moves through a gentle arc — settling, deepening, a still middle, a slow return. Most clients report drifting between waking and sleep, with time losing its shape entirely.
Who is it for?
Sound baths suit almost everyone — in particular:
Anyone who finds silent meditation difficult
People recovering from burnout, long stress, or illness
Highly sensitive people who struggle with overstimulation and want to properly rest
Partners or friends coming along for shared calm (book the group sound bath for parties or small groups)
Please mention when booking if you have: pregnancy, a pacemaker, recent surgery, severe tinnitus, certain neurological conditions (including epilepsy), or any sound sensitivity. In many cases we can adapt the session; occasionally another of our therapies would suit you better.

After your session
Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. Drink plenty of water, eat something grounding, and let yourself sleep as deeply as you want to. It's not unusual to feel very emotional, very sleepy, or very clear-headed in the day or two that follow — all part of how sound lands.
About your therapist
Sound bath sessions are facilitated by Richy ("Dickie") Parton, holistic therapist and Usui Reiki Master. Dickie holds sessions quietly and unhurriedly, letting the sound itself be the teacher.
